Capsules in general
What materials are capsules made of?
What materials are capsules made of?
Our empty capsules are available in various materials so you can find the right solution for your individual requirements:
Gelatin capsules – the classic, stable and well-tolerated, inexpensive, ideal for many applications. They consist of pure bovine gelatin and water. All standard sizes from 000 to 5 are available. (The exception is the large capsules for farm animals, which are made of porcine gelatin.)
Vegetarian/vegan capsules made from HPMC (hydroxypropylmethylcellulose) – plant-based, without animal-derived ingredients, manufactured from modified cellulose, suitable for vegetarian and vegan products. Also available in sizes 000 to 5.
Vegetarian/vegan delayed-release capsules, also known as DR capsules (DR = delayed release), are made from HPMC and gellan gum, a polysaccharide produced from plant-based sources. These capsules have a significantly longer dissolution time. While \"normal\" capsules dissolve in the stomach within 10-15 minutes, DR capsules, according to the manufacturer, take 30-90 minutes to dissolve. Available in sizes 1 to 00.
Pullulan capsules - Unlike standard vegan or vegetarian capsules, pullulan capsules are not produced through chemical modification, but rather through the natural fermentation of plant extracts. This process yields pullulan, a high-quality product made from 100% plant-based ingredients and is non-GMO. Pullulan capsules are made exclusively from poly-maltotriose, guar gum, algae extract, acetic acid, and water, and are vegan. Available in sizes 1 to 00.
Which capsule is right for me?
Which capsule is right for me?
The correct capsule size depends on the dosage you wish to administer. A clear capsule size chart with recommended fill quantities can be found under the "Size" tab for each capsule, as well as here in the FAQ (Capsule Sizes - An Overview).
Please note: Depending on the density of the powder, the actual fill quantity per capsule may differ from the stated values. This applies particularly to very light or very heavy fillers.
Especially with large capsules (size 00 or 000), you should also consider how easy they are to swallow. Many people, especially children, have difficulty swallowing very large capsules. In this case, it is often more practical to divide the desired amount into several smaller capsules instead of choosing one particularly large capsule.
This way you can quickly find the right capsule size for your needs – whether for powders, dietary supplements or individual mixtures.

To give you an overview of our different capsule sizes, we have compiled a size chart for you. You can find this on the Capsule Information page.
How much material fits into one capsule?
How much material fits into one capsule?
The capacity of a capsule depends on both its size and the density of the filling material. For medium-density powders, you can use the following guidelines:
- Size 00: approx. 700–950 mg
- Size 0: approx. 500–700 mg
- Size 1: approx. 400–500 mg
Please note: The finer and denser the material, the more fits into a capsule. With very light or bulky powders, the actual fill quantity may be significantly less.

How do I fill my empty capsules?
How do I fill my empty capsules?
Filling empty capsules is simple and can be done for small quantities in everyday life as well as larger quantities with regular use. Depending on your needs, you can fill your capsules manually by hand or use tools such as a capsule filler, which makes the task considerably easier.
Manual filling:
- Carefully open the capsule into its top and bottom parts.
- Fill the powder into the lower half using a small spoon or spatula.
- Press the powder down lightly if necessary.
- Replace the top half – done.
For larger quantities, we recommend using a capsule filler.
You can find more information in our FAQ section “Capsule Fillers”.
Do you also offer enteric-coated capsules?
Do you also offer enteric-coated capsules?
Our gelatin capsules, vegetarian capsules (HPMC) and pullulan capsules are not enteric-coated.
However, we do offer delayed-release (DR) vegetarian capsules. While these are not completely enteric-coated, they do slow down the dissolution process. As a result, many of the ingredients are released later – usually in the intestines.
If you prefer delayed-release capsules, our DR capsules are a suitable option. However, please note that complete dissolution in the intestine, as with enteric-coated capsules, cannot be guaranteed.
Can I fill my capsules with liquids?
Can I fill my capsules with liquids?
Yes, that's generally possible – however, our capsules are primarily designed for powders and granules. If you wish to use liquids,
Please note the following:
- Essential oils: These can be filled into gelatin or HPMC capsules. They do not attack the capsule shell and remain stable for several days. A slight oily film on the outside may occur.
- Fatty oils and waxes (e.g., coconut oil in a slightly heated state): Also suitable – however, do not heat the substance above 35 °C, as the capsule shell could otherwise dissolve.
- Aqueous liquids: These soften the capsule shell very quickly. Capsules containing water or water-based solutions should therefore be taken immediately after filling.
- Freezing: A proven method for liquid-filled capsules. They remain stable in the freezer for months and can even be taken directly from frozen.
Please note: Every liquid behaves differently. Therefore, it is best to test for yourself which procedure is optimal for your application.
